dunkelgrün yarns is still a hobby, not a business. It’s not about making money, but about growing, developing and sharing my love for colors and yarns. I have dyed yarns for my own use for several years, so I know how to achieve certain colors and effects on my knitted items and I am happy to share that with you.
Some of my repeatable colorways – dyed with acid dyes – can be found here.
Dyeing yarn is not a science for me… as a balance to accurate experiments in the lab, I like to play around and let intuition take the lead when I spend time behind the dye pots. That’s why you will find me dyeing a lot of unique skeins that won’t be exactly reproducable.
Natural dyeing is always an experiment for me and there are no repeatable colorways. They are all “one of a kind”. Similar colors might be coming back, but there is no guarantee. Here is a gallery of my naturally dyed yarns.
I dye all my yarns using either acid dyes or natural dyes. I carefully select the acid dyes I am using, avoiding those that are harmful for the environment, like premetallized dyes.
For natural dyeing I use materials that are known to have a high wash and light fastness – unless otherwise noted in the item description.
Except for cochineal (which is an insect that gives a crimson red dye) all my natural dyes are plant dyes.
Cat hair warning!
All the dyeing, washing, drying and packaging is done in my small apartment which I share with my boyfriend and our lovely cat Leila. While I make sure that she doesn’t sleep in the yarns that I send out to other people, I can never guarantee that my yarn will be 100% cat hair free. I hope that you understand that.
